On June 12, 2014, a severe thunderstorm dropped hail of up to DVD-size (4.75 inches) on parts of Abilene, TX, causing an estimated $400 million in damage. With recent NWS Doppler (NEXRAD) radar upgrades that include dual polarization capability, together with an increasing number of on-the-ground hail reports from volunteer weather observers and social media, it is possible to perform detailed analysis of hailstorms, including estimation of hail size and characteristics. The radar images for the Abilene storm show examples of the high-resolution radar data now available.
