Weather & Climate…
Reconstructing the Past,
Anticipating the Future

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall near Buras, LA, causing catastrophic damage in southern Louisiana and Mississippi. To reconstruct weather conditions during hurricanes like Katrina, we always rely on NOAA weather data, such as Doppler radar animation from the National Weather Service (left image) and satellite imagery from University of Wisconsin (middle image). We often perform post-storm wind speed analyses based on these data and surface weather observations and compare the results with wind speed standards (right image).
